Travel Entry Requirements 2026 - What to Check Before Travelling

Booking your flight is often the easy part. Making sure you are actually allowed to enter your destination is where things can become more complicated.


Travel requirements can vary depending on where you are travelling, which passport you hold, how long you are staying and if you are transiting through another country. Passport validity, visas, electronic travel authorisations, health requirements and supporting documents can all play a part as well.


Your Passport Matters More Than Where You Live


One of the most common assumptions travellers make is that living in the UK automatically means the same entry requirements apply to everyone travelling from the UK.


Unfortunately, travel does not work like that.


Two passengers can be -


  • Sitting next to each on the same flight

  • Travelling to the same destination

  • Lived in the UK for same length of time....


.....and still face completely different entry requirements. The key factor is often the passport or travel document you hold.


For example -


  • British passport holders may be able to enter a country without applying for a traditional visa in advance.

  • Travellers living in the UK but holding a non-British passport may need a visa, electronic authorisation or additional documentation.

  • Dual nationals may need to consider which passport they use for different parts of their journey.

  • Requirements may also differ for travellers using refugee or other Home Office-issued travel documents.


This is why it's important to check travel requirements based on your nationality and travel documents, not just your destination.


Travelling From the UK With a British Passport


British passport holders can travel to many destinations without needing to obtain a traditional visa before departure.


However, that does not necessarily mean you can simply book a flight and turn up at the airport. Depending on the destination, you may still need -


  • A passport with a minimum period of validity remaining

  • An electronic travel authorisation

  • Proof of onward or return travel

  • Proof of accommodation

  • Evidence that you have sufficient funds for your stay

  • Travel insurance

  • Vaccination or health documentation

  • Additional documents when travelling with children


The requirements can also depend on how long you intend to stay and the purpose of your visit. A holiday, business trip, study programme or long-term stay can all fall under different entry rules.


Travelling From the UK With a Non-British Passport


If you live in the UK but do not hold a British passport, your travel requirements are likely to be different.


Your UK immigration status allows you to live, work or study in the UK. It does NOT automatically determine whether another country will allow you to enter.


The country you are visiting will usually consider factors such as -


  • Your nationality

  • The passport or travel document you hold

  • The purpose of your visit

  • The length of your stay

  • Whether you already hold a valid visa or residence permit

  • Whether you are transiting through another country


This means a UK resident travelling on a non-British passport should always check the specific entry requirements for their nationality. It's good practice compared to assuming the requirements for British travellers apply to them and being met with a surprise.


Transit Requirements


Your final destination is not the only country you may need permission to enter.


If your journey involves a stopover, you may also need to check the requirements for the country where you are transiting.


Some passengers may be able to remain airside without additional documentation. Others may require a transit visa or authorisation depending on their nationality, passport and length of connection.


This becomes important if -


  • You need to collect and recheck your luggage

  • You are changing airports

  • Your connection requires you to pass through immigration

  • You have an overnight layover

  • Your nationality is subject to specific transit visa requirements


A cheap flight can quickly become an expensive problem if you discover you cannot legally complete the journey.


Travel Entry Requirements Can Change


Another challenge is that entry requirements are not permanently fixed.


Countries can introduce new electronic travel systems, update visa policies, change passport validity rules or introduce additional health and security requirements.


That means information you checked when you first started planning your holiday may not necessarily be the same when your departure date arrives.


What To Check Before Travelling?


Before you travel, make sure you understand the requirements for both your destination and any countries you will transit through.


At a minimum, check:


  • Passport validity – Does your passport have enough validity remaining?

  • Visa requirements – Do you need to apply before travelling?

  • Electronic travel authorisation – Is an ETA, ESTA, eVisa or similar approval required?

  • Transit rules – Do you need permission to pass through another country?

  • Return or onward tickets – Will you need proof that you intend to leave?

  • Accommodation details – Do you need confirmation of where you will be staying?

  • Financial requirements – Could you be asked to show evidence that you can support yourself during your trip?

  • Health requirements – Are there any vaccination certificates or other health documents required?

  • Children's travel documents – Are additional permissions or documents needed?

  • Travel insurance – Is it recommended or required for your destination?


Keep Checking Before You Travel


Travel requirements should not be something you check once and forget about.


A good habit is to check when you are planning your trip, again when you are booking your trip and again closer to your departure date.
